framing

These next photos are from the observation deck of the Empire State Building, taken after I was wholly invigorated by the eye bounty afforded by the lobby and the architectural details we were able to espy on the tour (see photos from the latest posts).

This photo has a foreboding quality to it, or at the very least, sinister. The dark shapes at the top are the prongs that surround the observation deck, designed to prevent tourists' leaps and other untoward activities. Coupled with the dark sky that looks as if Gotham's nemesis, the Joker, lurks about, the photo gives an unsettling cast to the top of the Empire State Building.

Enter the zoom lens.

Though out of focus, this framing allows the wonderful Art Deco feel of the building to emerge. The structure looms as noble, majestic.

And tomorrow, what we saw when we turned around...
