line-seeing

It's been a week since I returned from Dorothy Caldwell's class in Human Marks at the Nancy Crow Barn in central Ohio. I now have another compass point that changes the way I can navigate through any venue. Lines. Thick lines, thin lines, wavy lines, every-which-way lines. Lucky me.

The first photo is of a piece I did for an exercise in Kantha stitching - a type of art developed in India, using a simple running stitch. Here's a detail of a piece Dorothy showed us, an example of pure excellence in this art form:

My little sketch reinterprets my "Figure and Ground" woman, body taken down to rudimentary lines, hair taking off just-so, horizontal lines flowing across the plane, ending in little knots and frayed threads. I loved the looseness I felt creating this piece.

I love reading your blog! You do such a good job of describing your process and oftentimes, your mood while working. I feel that you give us a chance to peer into the mind and heart of an artist. Thank you!
