Santa Barbara splendor

Spectacular ocean views, free food, Pellegrino and wine were not enough to entice some to forgo Tuesday night's debates in favor of the opening night for Santa Barbara-based Fibervision's newest art quilt exhibit.

Nevertheless, many opted to TiVo the future President and were exhuberant about what they saw through the missionesque arches -- the Pacific Ocean -- and all 'round, beautiful people (this is California!) and even more beautiful art.

Fibervision is a group of 25 who meet monthly and exhibit several times a year. Members live in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties and range from full time artists to those who give up sleep in devotion to their passion.

Here is a handsome man I snagged in the entryway (notice my Paris Hilton hand-on-hip pose). We are flanked on our left and right by two of my pieces, "Nude Stitches #9" and "Curves."

Actually, I know this handsome man. I convinced him to marry me 32 years ago.

Here are the Blog People Plus One -- friends from both Fibervision and my Ventura County-based art quilt group, Extreme Quilters...left to right, Judy Rys, Carolyn Ryan, Karen Rips, moi, Susan Italo.

To the left of my third piece (and Carolyn and me, below) is a stellar work by Linda Cassirer, "Century Plant." (I include another shot of my piece, as the flash reflected off the glass, oops).

As I was remiss in securing permission of others to display photos of their work, I don't have other pictures of the show, but you can go to the Fibervision website to see more (and be sure to visit the terrific blogs, mentioned above).

Previously I wrote about the making of "Nude Stitches #9" (the bus in my hometown Coronado was #9, and so my favorite number). "Curves" shares some of the same border fabric (top/bottom and sides, respectively):

"Curves" started with a charcoal study done in a Life Drawing class (can you figure out the body parts???):

With Photoshop, I painted it with wild warm tones:

I printed this on silk. For the lower and upper borders, I recycled a Jacob's Ladder block made in part with Kafe Fassett fabric.

Both these pieces are mounted on 1/4" Plexiglass, attached with transparent fishing line.

The show is at the Cabrillo Pavilion Arts Center though October 24. As Bob Barker would say, come on down!!!

Next is the City of Ventura Artwalk October 18 and 19 at the Aloha Steakhouse. Stay tuned!

I had a great time and the exhibit is really wonderful for those who haven't seen it yet, imagine looking at all this artwork with the ocean right out the big picture windows!
