future fabric fun

These are Indonesian cops (pronounced "chops"), used in making batik textiles. The intricate copper designs can be dipped in hot wax and pressed into fabric, forming a resist. When dry, the cloth can be painted or dyed and the design is revealed (remember invisible ink?).

I found them at a Santa Barbara store that is going out of business and the price was discounted (but still a bit pricey at that). What appealed to me was the simple but intricate geometric designs -- spare, but riotous at the same time.

My second glass face piece will come out of the kiln later today. Film at 11! (Well, tomorrow, anyway.)

Wow, they're beautiful! Looks like your GPS did its job well.

Wow, what a lucky find for you. I especially love the spiral design on the bottom of the second one. I have studied up on batik and read about these being used for large overall patterns. I have even considered trying my hand at making a few simple wax stamps when I do try batik but I'm just not sure what materials I can get away with using.
