the quilt festival, more!
My buddy Karen Rips made this piece, "Edge of the Woods" for the "Edges" exhibit at the Long Beach International Quilt Festival. Karen has made several works that explore the nature of the aspen tree -- this is the latest.
Karen quilted the piece first, then painted it with acrylics. Every time I looked at it at the Long Beach show, there were oodles of people gathered 'round it, with good reason. It is quite compelling, and, of course, photos just cannot capture the depth she achieved with her artistry.
For more of Karen's work, check out both her website and her blog!

I did stand directly in front of this lovely piece trying to figure out just exactly how it was done and in what order! It's quite extraordinary!
