...three birds in a pond!

(third post in a miniseries that began January 2) in an attempt to get an in-focus picture of the heron, I pulled back on my zoom and took a more distant shot.

And what to my wondering eyes should appear --
Two brave little ducks, approaching sans fear!
(apologies to Clement Clarke Moore)

Here is an alternative composition of this image, a crop that only highlights the three birds.

The more distant shot better represents the experience of witnessing this tiny vignette as it unfolded in a vast expanse of water devoid of other visible wildlife. As I watched the event, the pond felt quiet and still, even though this took place in an audible hard rain (visible in the first picture as it hits the water). The first photograph evokes this feeling, while the cropped framing does not.
