Pictured above are the front and reverse sides of "Evolution of an Artist," which was just accepted into the special exhibit "Beneath the Surface." This invitation exhibit by Dinner at Eight Artists will debut at the Long Beach International Quilt Show July 22-25.
The work was digitally created. If you study the traditional blocks on reverse side and the two sides of the front, you can see that they are in fact the same.
The actual blocks on the back were photographed and arranged to fit next to the shape of the nude figure. The traditional blocks represent the past in my evolution as an art quilter, so I digitally faded their images as I shaped them around the figure.
The stitching also represents the juxtaposition between traditional and nontraditional. The blocks and right side of the body are stitched traditionally, a salute to the requirement of traditional quilt shows which call for dense stitching. The left side of the body has less dense stitching, allowing the image to show through more fully.
The finished piece measures 36" x 48" and I must say is one of my fav-o-rites.
